STATE DEMOCRATS REINTRODUCE ASSISTED SUICIDE LEGISLATION, 2025 SENATE BILL (SB) 1114

Published 3.16.2026

Last Thursday, March 12, in the waning days of the 2025-2026 legislative session, state Democrats reintroduced legislation legalizing killing at the end of life. Authored by Senator Diane Hesselbein (D-Middleton) and Representative Randy Udell (D-Fitchburg), Senate Bill (SB) 1114 (circulated as LRB-5643/1) would contravene current Wisconsin law prohibiting assisted suicide. Thankfully, no Republican legislator signed on to the bill.

Specifically, SB 1114 would permit an individual to request and obtain a prescription for medication for the purpose of ending his or her life. It would legalize assisted suicide for people aged eighteen and over who have a terminal disease and who make an oral and written request to their attending physician, advanced practice registered nurse, or physician assistant for medication to kill themselves. A medical provider who refuses to participate in the assisted suicide must, upon the patient’s request, transfer the patient’s medical records to the new provider.

Pro-Life Wisconsin Legislative Director Matt Sande sent a memo to all Assembly and Senate Republican legislators. The following are excerpts from that memo:

Assisted suicide is decidedly unethical; it offers death as a “solution” to elderly, disabled, depressed, or terminally ill people, and thwarts the very meaning of care. Killing is not caring, and the Wisconsin Legislature should not allow it.

There is no dignity in death by suicide. To posit that assisted suicide is the most compassionate answer to human suffering is nothing more than a cruel lie. To those who are elderly, disabled, depressed, or terminally ill, proposing assisted suicide as a “solution” to their condition sends the message that there is no meaning to their life and suicide is the easiest answer for everyone. It also robs them of something integral to the human spirit – hope. Real compassion takes time and commitment. It means suffering with someone, bearing their burden. And so often, that is what a suffering or disabled person is yearning for: love, inclusion, and reassurance that their pain can be medically controlled. […]

Human beings, no matter their state of health or ability, have intrinsic worth, inestimable value, and inviolable dignity. The message of Wisconsin’s pro-life community to you is simple: Have courage! Don’t take the low and hopeless road proffered by assisted suicide.

Although the current legislative session is quickly ending, know that should Democrats gain power in the Fall elections they will aggressively move to reintroduce and pass this deadly legislation next January. We must all work hard to retain pro-life majorities in the state legislature and elect a pro-life governor to stave off this acute threat.
