Legislation cutting Planned Parenthood’s heavily inflated Medicaid contraceptive drug reimbursement rate passed the Wisconsin Assembly today. Senate Bill (SB) 238 passed the Assembly on a 61-35 vote. Having already passed the Wisconsin Senate, SB 238 now heads to Governor Walker’s desk for his anticipated signature. The bill is expected to eliminate approximately $4.5 million in public funding from Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin (PPWI), the state’s largest abortion provider.
“Pro-Life Wisconsin thanks Assembly Republicans for passing legislation that respects the consciences of pro-life taxpayers who oppose the use of public funds for abortion,” said PLW State Director Dan Miller. “Abortion is not healthcare. Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin profits from killing unborn babies and should not be considered a healthcare provider. Wisconsin cannot continue to throw money at organizations that perform abortions. We thank Speaker Vos for scheduling SB 238 and Representative Jacque for his steadfast leadership on this critical bill.”
Senate Bill 238, co-authored by Representative Andre Jacque (R-De Pere), curtails PPWI’s Medicaid reimbursement rate for contraceptive drugs, paying them at the actual cost they pay for these drugs and not the artificially inflated rate they are getting now. By PPWI’s own admission the bill’s enactment would be “clinic closing,” cutting their annual public subsidy by approximately $4.5 million.
“Putting a stop to the exorbitant contraceptive drug reimbursement rate for Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin was long overdue, and Wisconsin taxpayers thank Assembly Republicans for doing so,” said PLW Legislative Director Matt Sande. “This common sense approach will pay Planned Parenthood what it actually pays for these contraceptive drugs, nothing more and nothing less, as most states already do. If they cannot operate their clinics under this equitable payment model, then they can seek private funding.”
Pro-Life Wisconsin urges the Wisconsin Legislature and Governor Walker to keep moving down the long road toward totally defunding Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin of all taxpayer dollars.
